When I've visited St Alfege crypt in the past, one of the striking family names adorning one of the vaults is Martyr's.

While browsing the local newspaper archives of the mid 19th century, Mr Thomas Martyr's name frequently appears in the reporting of meetings of the Board of Governors and Directors. Martyr, of Croom's Hill, died in 1852. It was said in this notice that "perhaps there are no persons more identified with the town of Greenwich, than the respected family of which Mr Martyr was the oldest representative".

His widow, Ann Martyr, died at the age of 74 in Ramsgate, in 1862.
