The saga over the future of Greenwich Council's newspaper Greenwich Time continues to rumble on. The government has recently ordered the council to cease its weekly production of the paper and to comply with its code of conduct on council publicity (which would mean publishing no more than four times per year).

This week Greenwich Council announced it would be seeking a Judicial Review of the government's decision so that it can keep producing the paper

"This is about local democracy and being able to allow all of our residents the same opportunity to access essential information about issues directly concerning them," said leader of the council, Denise Hyland.

In response to the council's decision, a petition has been started by local campaigner Stewart Christie calling on the council to stop publishing GT and to drop its legal challenge.

"The council's recent decision to disregard this ruling and seek a potentially costly judicial review is inappropriate, especially at a time of cost-cutting elsewhere," says the petition text.
